According to statistics drivers can expect to encounter an active work zone one out of every 100 miles driven on highways and annually 40,000 people are injured in crashes in work zones in accidents that didn’t need to happen. That’s if the people had shown just a little patience. There is one work-zone fatality every eight hours in this country, or three per day.

Drivers sometimes become angry when they see warning signs announcing a road repair project and a “Flagger,” a person with a flag directing them to slow down or stop. These drivers sometimes blame the work crew for their usually five-minute (or less) delay.

Sometimes a driver will see road work crews standing talking to each other and make a mocking comment to themselves about how lazy the workers are (one person I know actually yells “CALTRANS!” at road crews, meaning the California Dept. of Transportation, a state-run highway management agency. In this driver’s mix-mangled logic, he’s apparently got it in his thick head that highway and roadwork people are lazy overpaid loafers whose sole goal is to ruin his life.

Road crews are instead highly trained professionals paid for what they do, work that is vitally important to maintain our roads, in jobs that are often physically taxing, standing on your feet for hours lifting, bending, digging, operating heavy equipment, in all kinds of weather—-a job many of us would not want to do.

Road Safety crews are allowed breaks just like you are at your job.

But the work is also dangerous. Every worker on a road project knows they are at the mercy of drivers and whether drivers are paying attention.
