Your Conscience and Contribution to Road Improvement

The engineers at City Rise Safety Services, California’s leading traffic control and traffic safety company, road safety, design traffic control plans for roadwork projects. The company provides personnel including flaggers and traffic control equipment including traffic cones, arrow boards, electronic signal towers and other devices to warn traffic and direct motorists around constructions sites—-safely.

The jobs the company does are a partnership with road crews doing repair work or improvements to the roads we all depend on. The hard working men and women doing the repair work ask only one small favor, that you the motorist exercise just a little cooperation and patience to slow down or stop as directed so the needed work can get done.

All too often some drivers think only of themselves.

You might say to yourself, I’m in a hurry and uh-oh, there’s road work. The sign says “Prepare to Stop.”

I’m not prepared to stop. Look, cars are slowing that means I’ll have to slow down too.

You sit with the other cars waiting. You contemplate breaking out of the line and doing an illegal U-turn to go back the way you came and seek an alternative route, but this is risky on a narrow two-lane road. Oncoming traffic in the other lane could hit you.

Ask yourself is it worth it?

The answer clearly should be no, it isn’t worth it. Your life is not likely to be so greatly influenced by getting somewhere five minutes (or less) later. Is it that important you should risk your life and that of other drivers?

According to statistics drivers can expect to encounter an active work zone one out of every 100 miles driven on highways and annually 40,000 people are injured in crashes in work zones in accidents that didn’t need to happen. That’s if the people had shown just a little patience. There is one work-zone fatality every eight hours in this country, or three per day.

Drivers sometimes become angry when they see warning signs announcing a road repair project and a “Flagger,” a person with a flag directing them to slow down or stop. These drivers sometimes blame the work crew for their usually five-minute (or less) delay.

Ask yourself are you not the direct beneficiary of the smooth repaired road that will result from the work?

Sometimes a driver will see road work crews standing talking to each other and make a mocking comment to themselves about how lazy the workers are (one person I know actually yells “CALTRANS!” at road crews, meaning the California Dept. of Transportation, a state-run highway management agency. In this driver’s mix-mangled logic, he’s apparently got it in his thick head that highway and roadwork people are lazy overpaid loafers whose sole goal is to ruin his life.

Road crews are instead highly trained professionals paid for what they do, work that is vitally important to maintain our roads, in jobs that are often physically taxing, standing on your feet for hours lifting, bending, digging, operating heavy equipment, in all kinds of weather—-a job many of us would not want to do.

Road Safety crews are allowed breaks just like you are at your job.

But the work is also dangerous. Every worker on a road project knows they are at the mercy of drivers and whether drivers are paying attention.

Approximately 20 percent of the highway system in the U.S. is under repair or construction at any given time.

Personnel at City Rise Safety Services urge drivers to practice some basic humanity and make a small contribution, very small, a tiny sacrifice if you will—-show patience and respect to road workers so that the road improvements everyone depends on can get done safely.

The Mission to proper Road Safety is to keep you safe but your help is needed to do it.
